Martin Klima, co-founder of Warhorse Studios, has voiced his frustration with the prevalence of RPGs that focus on "power fantasy" for teenagers, stating he is "bored and tired" of such titles. In an interview with PC Gamer, Klima elaborated on his preference for RPGs that deviate from the typical "chosen one" narrative with a grand task of saving the universe, describing these common setups as repetitive.
Klima believes that while these power fantasies may appeal to a younger demographic, the audience for RPGs is much older today and is likely seeking more diverse experiences. He suggested that major publishers often rely on proven formulas, leading to a recycling of the same concepts. Klima pointed to Ubisoft as an example, acknowledging the "excellent craftsmanship" in their games, such as the original Assassin's Creed and Far Cry, but lamenting that playing the same game repeatedly "becomes stale."
He expressed a desire for more innovation, even while acknowledging the financial risks involved in experimentation. Klima also recently commented on his hope that Grand Theft Auto 6 will pave the way for increased game prices.
