Square Enix has announced that Kingdom Hearts 4 is slated for release in late 2027, offering a much-anticipated release window four years after the game's initial announcement. The update was shared at Disney's D23 fan event and accompanied by a new trailer.

This latest trailer provides a glimpse into one of the new worlds players will explore: the vibrant Land of the Dead from Disney Pixar's Coco. The footage shows protagonist Sora in action, battling enemies amidst a concert crowd and traversing sky rails. The trailer also hints at the reunion of Sora with key characters like Mickey, Goofy, and Hades, who are actively seeking him following his disappearance at the conclusion of Kingdom Hearts 3.

While a precise release date has not yet been set, the confirmation of a late 2027 window is a significant development for fans who have experienced a prolonged period of limited information. This news follows closely on the heels of the first gameplay preview in June, marking a surprisingly rapid progression in communication from Square Enix.

Kingdom Hearts 4 will usher in a new narrative chapter known as the Lost Master Arc. The primary setting for this arc is Quadratum, which is described as Kingdom Hearts' interpretation of Tokyo. However, the new trailer confirms that the series will continue its tradition of visiting diverse Disney worlds.

Despite the scarcity of details over the years, series director Tetsuya Nomura has consistently assured players that development is proceeding as planned. Both Square Enix and Disney have strong incentives to support the franchise, as Disney has previously identified Kingdom Hearts as one of its "billion-dollar franchises," underscoring the enduring appeal of its unique blend of Disney characters and Final Fantasy-style JRPG elements.
