Director and designer Tetsuya Nomura has fueled speculation among fans with his choice of attire at a recent D23 event. Nomura, known for his work on series such as Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, and The World Ends With You, was seen wearing a shirt featuring the text "Black Honey Chili Cookie."
This particular phrase holds significance as it is not only the name of a real-life fashion brand but also appears within the world of The World Ends With You. The sighting occurred during a Kingdom Hearts 4 panel at D23, leading to theories that characters from The World Ends With You might make an appearance in the upcoming game. This parallels behavior seen from other Square Enix directors, such as Final Fantasy XIV's Naoki Yoshida, who often dons cosplay related to upcoming job class announcements.
The World Ends With You, originally released on the Nintendo DS in 2007, garnered a dedicated following, though its 2021 sequel received a more muted reception. Despite this, the original game has maintained a cult status within Square Enix's RPG catalog. The potential inclusion of its characters could appeal to its devoted fanbase and align with Kingdom Hearts 4's apparent direction, which seems to be drawing from lesser-known entries in the Kingdom Hearts universe, such as Union Cross. Furthermore, characters from The World Ends With You have previously appeared in the Kingdom Hearts series, notably as prominent NPCs in Dream Drop Distance, making a reunion in Kingdom Hearts 4 a plausible prospect.
However, the T-shirt could also be a simple gesture. Nomura has a known appreciation for fashion and is reportedly friends with Hiromu Takahara, the creator of the Black Honey Chili Cookie brand, who was himself featured as an NPC in The World Ends With You. In this light, the shirt might simply be a friendly endorsement rather than a direct hint at future game content. Regardless of its true meaning, the detail has sparked considerable discussion among Square Enix followers keen to decipher any potential clues about Kingdom Hearts 4's unfolding narrative and character roster.
