Square Enix has announced that Kingdom Hearts 4 is scheduled to release in late 2027. The confirmation came alongside a new trailer that presented a complex narrative involving familiar characters in unfamiliar situations.
The trailer depicts protagonist Sora in a new world called Quadratum, a city visually inspired by Mexican Día de Muertos celebrations. Meanwhile, Donald Duck and Goofy embark on a journey to the Greek underworld, eventually reappearing as "force ghosts" in Quadratum without Sora. The game's creative director, Tatsuya Nomura, has emphasized that the late 2027 release window is firm and that the studio does not anticipate delays, having now established a specific target.
According to Square Enix, the inclusion of the Mexican-inspired setting in the trailer is connected to the 2017 Pixar film Coco. The synopsis provided by the developer outlines Sora's efforts to find a way back to his own world from Quadratum, while Donald and Goofy search the underworld for clues to his whereabouts. Mickey Mouse is also shown to be seeking Sora, but appears to be doing so from a library. The gameplay is expected to feature fast-paced combat, combo building, and the strategic switching of Keyblades.
Kingdom Hearts 4 is also slated for a PC release, with a Steam page now available for wishlisting. The series is known for its intricate lore, which has often left players seeking explanations, with previous analyses attempting to clarify the overarching narrative.
