The recent D23 event provided a significant amount of new information and emotional moments for Kingdom Hearts fans. A trailer for Kingdom Hearts IV showcased Sora's arrival in a world inspired by Pixar's Coco, alongside playable segments featuring Mickey, Donald, and Goofy. The spotlight also fell on the anticipated return of Riku, Sora's close friend and rival. During a "Deep Dive into Kingdom Hearts" panel, voice actors Haley Joel Osment (Sora) and David Gallagher (Riku), who have voiced the characters since their teenage years, took the stage. In a moment that marked a first in the series' 25-year history, they performed a scene live together.

This particular scene, depicting Sora and Riku's introspective conversation in the Realm of Darkness from the end of Kingdom Hearts II, took on a somber tone just a day after the event, with the news of Hayden Panettiere's death at age 36. Panettiere was the original English voice of Kairi. During their D23 performance, Osment and Gallagher recreated the moment where Sora and Riku share a quiet dialogue, a rare instance of them directly connecting after years of intertwined but separate journeys.

As Sora reads a message from Kairi found in a bottle, the original dialogue intended for Sora and Kairi's voices to overlap. At D23, this overlap was noted as missing. Panel moderator Khleo Thomas, who also narrated the scene, pointed out the absence of both Panettiere and current Kairi voice actor Alyson Stoner. "We hear the text of the letter read out loud. Sora and Kairi’s voices blend together," Thomas stated. "Today, we’ll leave it to Sora."

Following the scene's completion, Thomas suggested a group selfie, noting the need for one more guest. "There’s only really one way to end this: We need one more special guest, don’t you think? I got Sora with me, I got Riku with me, I feel like I need Mickey with me?" he mused, before a performer in a Mickey Mouse costume joined them on stage.

For some attendees, there was a hope that either Panettiere or Stoner might appear to represent Kairi. However, the arrival of Mickey's costumed counterpart led to a subdued acceptance. At the time, the absence was rationalized by the fact that Stoner had not voiced the original scene, and Panettiere had stepped away from the role years prior. The hope for a reunion of the original Destiny Islands trio remained, only to be tragically overshadowed by the news of Panettiere's passing the following day.

Panettiere's extensive career included many notable roles, but her portrayal of Kairi held particular significance for many fans. The poignant parting words between Sora and Kairi at the conclusion of the first Kingdom Hearts game was an early moment that evoked deep emotion for players. While Stoner has continued the role, the unique essence brought by the younger Panettiere was deeply missed by many, even in her later teenage years voicing the character. Though she had not been actively involved with the franchise in recent years, Panettiere's voice remains integral to some of Kingdom Hearts' most impactful moments, and her absence leaves the series' world feeling less bright.
