Twenty years after its initial release, Nicklas Nygren's foundational freeware metroidvania Knytt has been re-released for modern hardware. Known to players as Nifflas, Nygren was a prolific figure in the early indie game scene, creating ambient and engrossing experiences.

The original Knytt, inspired by characters from Moominvalley, places players in the role of a small creature. This character can hop and scurry, but lacks any offensive capabilities, necessitating a reliance on player dexterity to navigate obstacles, including insects and space lasers, across strange peaks and mysterious caverns. The game emphasizes exploration and puzzle-solving as players uncover the map, encounter quirky locals, and unravel hypnotic mysteries.

Originally developed through a forum collaboration in 2006, Knytt gained significant attention, appearing in print gaming publications alongside other notable freeware titles like Cave Story. Its success led to two sequels, Knytt Stories and Knytt Underground, the latter of which was released for the PlayStation 3. Nygren's most recent published work was the abstract indie game Ynglet, and he is currently developing Rhythm Doggo.

The new Knytt Classic is described as a "pixel-perfect" port of the original game, developed by Bit Kid, known for their work on Chasm. This updated version includes the full original game, a new "UltraTough" mode, and an additional mod created by Arvi "Hempuli" Teikari, the developer behind Baba Is You. Knytt Classic is available for free, allowing a new generation to experience the game that captivated players two decades ago.
