Christopher Abbott, who is set to star in Marvel's upcoming X-Men reboot, has stated that he was aware Kraven the Hunter was not performing well during its production. Abbott, who had a minor role in the Sony Spider-Man Universe film, shared his observations on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast.
He described a lack of clarity regarding his character and the film's overall direction. "I don't know what I was doing in that thing. I didn't understand what the superpower was, I didn't know what was going on," Abbott said. He further elaborated, "I was like 'I take off my glasses and what happens?' I feel like no one really had a good answer."
Kraven the Hunter was part of Sony's strategy to build a cinematic universe around Spider-Man's supporting characters, a slate that also included Venom, Morbius, and Madame Web. While the studio had plans for potential crossovers and films centered on characters like El Muerto and Jackpot, these projects faced numerous hurdles and cancellations.
Reflecting on the experience, Abbott admitted, "In the moment, I was like... 'I don't think this is going well.'" IGN's review of Kraven the Hunter echoed these sentiments, awarding the film a 3/10 and criticizing its script and action sequences.
Abbott is now set to take on a leading role as Charles Xavier in the MCU's X-Men film, alongside Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Scott Summers, and Adam Driver as Mr. Sinister.
