BlackJack Studio has unveiled Langrisser: Sea of Sword, the latest entry in the long-running tactical RPG franchise, accompanied by a debut teaser trailer. The game is set to release globally on iOS, Android, Steam, and PC, with pre-registration now open.
The Langrisser series, now in its 35th year, is recognized for its squad-based tactical combat and branching narratives. Langrisser: Sea of Sword aims to build upon this legacy while introducing a notably darker and more intense storyline. Shifting from the series' recent focus on bright, heroic adventures, this new installment delves into factional conflicts and power struggles, emphasizing how player decisions can impact the fate of nations.
Players will assume the role of a nameless protagonist seeking to recover lost memories. Accompanied by a mysterious white-haired girl, the journey unfolds across a continent shrouded in the titular Sea of Mists. The teaser trailer hints at this grim atmosphere through imagery of discarded weapons and armor on a beach, suggesting a recent, brutal conflict, contrasted with visuals of decaying underwater ruins that replace once-vibrant city streets and castles.
Musical Direction and Development Team
The game's soundtrack is being composed by Yasunori Nishiki, a composer known for his sweeping orchestral scores in RPGs. Nishiki's previous work includes being the lead composer for the Octopath Traveler series, earning him a nomination for Best Music at The Game Awards. He has also contributed arrangements to titles such as Final Fantasy VII Remake and Kingdom Hearts III.
Development is spearheaded by BlackJack Studio, the same team behind Langrisser Mobile, which was released in 2018 and continues to be supported. Langrisser: Sea of Sword is expected to represent a significant advancement in graphical fidelity compared to its predecessors, leveraging several years of technological development.
Despite the graphical enhancements, the game will retain the hand-painted anime art style characteristic of the series. Character designs featured at the end of the trailer appear consistent with established series aesthetics, albeit with increased detail.
Release and Future Updates
Langrisser: Sea of Sword is planned for a simultaneous worldwide release across mobile, Steam, and PC. While a specific launch date has not yet been announced, BlackJack Studio has indicated that the first gameplay video is nearing completion and will be released soon. Players can sign up for pre-registration on the official website to receive the latest news and updates regarding the game.
