Developer BlackJack Studio has unveiled the first gameplay footage for its upcoming fantasy tactical RPG, Langrisser: Sea of Sword, showcasing significant evolutions to the long-running series. The trailer highlights a new dual-generals system, dynamic battlefields, and a more expansive world map.

The Langrisser series, which began in 1991, has historically featured a commander-and-troop system where players could recruit soldiers based on their hero's class. Langrisser: Sea of Sword builds upon this by allowing players to deploy two generals simultaneously, designating one as commander and the other as lieutenant. This system enables mixing soldier types from both generals into a single squad, offering greater strategic customization. Commanders and lieutenants can be swapped mid-battle to access different skills and alter a unit's tactical role. Furthermore, pairing specific generals can unlock unique cooperative skills, encouraging experimentation with various combinations.

Battlefields in Sea of Sword are designed to be more dynamic, featuring a wider array of terrain types and interactive environmental elements. Players will engage in combat across diverse locations such as dragon islands and forests, each with unique mechanics. Elevation differences and terrain will directly impact battle outcomes. The introduction of destructible environments opens up new strategic possibilities, including siege scenarios where players can breach fortifications or destroy bridges to impede enemy advances and create hazards.

Beyond combat, Langrisser: Sea of Sword expands on the series' typical progression by allowing players to explore various areas outside of battles. Instead of moving between disconnected maps, players can now traverse towns, forests, caves, and other locations. These explorable areas may contain environmental puzzles, NPCs offering side stories, material gathering opportunities, and hidden events. Players can also claim and develop a territory, transforming a basic encampment into a fully developed military stronghold.

The game also features a darker narrative, centering on a nameless protagonist and a mysterious girl named Eta journeying through a vast empire. Players will become embroiled in power struggles between competing factions and face difficult choices for survival.

Complementing the gameplay and story, the game's soundtrack is composed by Yasunori Nishiki, known for his work on the Octopath Traveler series. The visuals are presented in a hand-painted anime art style.

Langrisser: Sea of Sword is slated for a worldwide release on mobile, Steam, and PC. Pre-registration is currently open, and the game is available to wishlist on Steam. Further updates can be found on the game's official website and social media channels.
