While HBO has not officially confirmed a second season of Lanterns, the series has garnered significant critical and commercial success, with initial viewership numbers rivaling other major HBO launches. Despite the ongoing merger between Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Skydance, which has led to the cancellation of other planned DC series, co-creator Damon Lindelof has indicated that some writers are actively developing concepts for a potential season 2. Lindelof himself envisioned the series as a multi-season story, aiming to leave audiences eager for more.
Potential Plot Directions
Series co-creator Tom King has hinted at possible narrative paths for Lanterns, drawing inspiration from Geoff Johns' Green Lantern run. The first season concluded with the mysteries of Rushville and Hal Jordan's murder resolved, setting the stage for John Stewart's development as a solo hero. Stewart's custom oath, influenced by Sinestro's teachings on the corrupting power of fear, suggests that his future arcs could explore these themes. Sinestro, now stranded on a fear-contaminated planet, presents a significant potential threat, especially if John Stewart masters the creation of his own ring, a feat he has already demonstrated the capability of achieving. This could lead to further conflict with the Guardians of the Universe and the new Green Lantern of Earth.
Release Window and Future Appearances
If a second season of Lanterns is indeed greenlit, fans may face a considerable wait. Drawing parallels with HBO's Peacemaker, which saw a year-long gap between its renewal and its second season premiere, Lanterns season 2 could potentially arrive as late as 2029. However, John Stewart's journey as a Green Lantern will continue sooner. He is slated to appear in James Gunn's upcoming DCU film, Man of Tomorrow, premiering July 9, 2027. This film will also feature Guy Gardner and pit them against Brainiac alongside other prominent DC heroes like Superman and Supergirl.
