Lanterns Season 2 is currently in early development and awaiting an official green light from HBO, according to co-creator Damon Lindelof. While a firm commitment to more episodes has not yet been made, Lindelof confirmed in a conversation with Collider that writers are actively working on ideas for a potential second season.
Speaking after the conclusion of the first season, Lindelof addressed the status of future episodes. "I do not know anything about the creative," he stated, "and I wouldn't want to hamstring those writers in any way for what future storytelling mechanisms they could indulge in."
The first season concluded with a significant plot point: the apparent death of Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan. Lindelof elaborated on the creative decision to have the character definitively die, explaining that the writers wanted to avoid misleading viewers. "The worst possible schmuck-baity thing that we could do is show you a pilot where Hal Jordan was definitively dead, and then try to walk it back and say, 'Oh, he was a clone' or 'He's only mostly dead,'" he said.
Despite Hal Jordan's fate, Lindelof acknowledged the long history of Green Lantern lore in the comics, where characters have been known to return. He mentioned that the comics have explored storylines involving Parallax and that Hal Jordan himself has died and been resurrected multiple times within the canon.
Fans have shown strong appreciation for the series and its casting, with some comparing Kyle Chandler's portrayal of Hal Jordan to Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man. Aaron Pierre, who plays John Stewart, is confirmed to return as Earth's new Green Lantern in the upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. The extent of his role in that film and how it might connect to a potential Lanterns Season 2 remains to be seen.
IGN gave the Lanterns Season 1 finale an 8/10 review. Discussions about the future of the DC Universe also continue, particularly regarding the roles of James Gunn and Peter Safran within Warner Bros. Discovery.
