DC Studios has not yet greenlit a second season of the HBO series Lanterns, with co-CEO Peter Safran stating that a renewal hinges on the creative team finding a story that serves as a "worthy successor" to the first season. Safran indicated that if the collective parties at HBO, DC, and the executive producers feel they have a compelling narrative, then further seasons are a possibility.
Speaking in an interview with IGN, Safran was direct when asked about Lanterns season 2, confirming, "No." He elaborated that the show's potential continuation depends on the quality of the proposed storyline, referencing the success and reception of the first season.
Despite the uncertainty around a second season, the character of John Stewart, portrayed by Aaron Pierre, is set to appear in the upcoming film Superman: Man of Tomorrow. Safran explained that television remains a crucial component of the DC Studios slate, offering a format suitable for developing characters and stories that may later transition to feature films. He highlighted that the episodic nature of television allows for more narrative real estate than is typically possible in a movie.
The DC Universe's television slate will next feature the docuseries The People v. Gorilla Grodd in 2027, starring Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. Beyond that, DC Studios has not yet committed to its subsequent live-action project, with several options being considered. The studio also has a significant animation slate currently in development.
Safran also provided updates on other DC projects, including revealing the leads for the Mister Miracle show and confirming that Scott Snyder is writing scripts for an animated series titled Absolute Batman. On the film side, director James Gunn has not yet announced his next directorial project.
