Larian Studios is once again being linked to its Game of the Year-winning RPG, Baldur's Gate 3, through a new comic series announced by Dark Horse and Wizards of the Coast. The announcement, made on July 23 during San Diego Comic-Con, revealed a Baldur's Gate 3 comic series.
A post from Dark Horse on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, stated "With @larianstudios and @Wizards," indicating Larian's potential involvement. While the extent of the Belgian studio's collaboration remains unconfirmed, Larian studio chief Swen Vincke had earlier teased that something was in the works. In response to a post celebrating the three-year anniversary of Baldur's Gate 3's release, Vincke wrote, "couldn't have timed this better." This statement, initially speculated to refer to new Divinity: Original Sin developments, may have instead been a nod to the comic announcement.
The demand for Baldur's Gate 3 content persists more than three years after its launch. Despite Larian Studios not planning a sequel, Wizards of the Coast, the owner of the Baldur's Gate intellectual property and publisher of Dungeons & Dragons, appears intent on leveraging the game's popularity. An HBO series is planned as a narrative continuation of the game, and the new comic could serve to expand the lore further, potentially exploring the backstories of the seven origin characters before the events of the HBO series.
It is still unclear how Larian will contribute to the Dark Horse comic. The studio might have writers who worked on the game pen the comic's story or act as consultants. This development arrives at a time when Larian is focused on its next Divinity game and Wizards of the Coast has canceled a planned D&D game from Giant Skull studios. The comic offers a new avenue for fans to engage with the Baldur's Gate universe while awaiting future projects.
