League of Legends' collectible card game, Riftbound, is set to launch its fourth major expansion, Vendetta, on July 31st. Pre-release events for the set will commence at local stores on July 24th. This marks a significant milestone for the game, as it will be the first time an expansion receives a synchronized global release across all languages, including English and Chinese.
The Vendetta set introduces several new mechanics aimed at shaking up the game's meta. The Flow keyword allows players to play cards from their discard pile, removing them from the game afterward. This offers a strategic advantage by providing surprise plays or extending options when a player's hand is low, provided they have the necessary resources. An example provided is the signature spell Public Execution, which can be replayed from the discard pile via Flow at a significant rune cost.
Another new keyword, Empowered, enables certain cards to gain persistent upgrades on the field unless negated. The Helm of Suppression gear card, for instance, taxes opposing players' spell costs by an additional rune recycle when empowered, potentially limiting their strategic options. The card Kharox, when empowered, forces an opponent to discard three cards from their deck, after which the Kharox player can play a unit from the opponent's discard pile, ignoring its cost. This mechanic introduces an element of risk and reward, potentially allowing players to steal powerful enemy units.
The Burn keyword is also introduced, often working in conjunction with Flow. While running out of cards in a deck is not a loss condition in Riftbound, it triggers a 'Burn Out,' which shuffles the discard pile back into the deck and grants the opposing player a point. This mechanic is noted as being particularly suited for purple/chaos decks, which feature discard effects.
With the global release, players worldwide will begin on equal footing, potentially leading to a more stable meta without the immediate influence of regional advantages seen in past releases. This synchronized launch is expected to give players more time to explore new deck archetypes and strategies before any potential card bans or restrictions are considered by the development team.
Existing top-tier decks are expected to see adjustments with the new cards. The Irelia Blade Dancer deck, a purple/chaos and green/calm build, may incorporate spells like Twilight Step and Resonating Strike for enhanced unit movement, and potentially the Sanction spell to counter empowered cards. The Master Yi, Wuju Bladesman deck, utilizing green/calm and orange/body domains, could integrate new units like Gangplank and Renekton, and spells such as Onslaught for added offensive capabilities.
Beyond gameplay, Vendetta also features new collectible art elements. The set includes diptychs for the first time, composed of two cards that can be displayed side-by-side to form a larger artwork. There are 11 such diptych sets within the expansion, alongside new signature variants and Crystal Rose variants that draw inspiration from League of Legends: Wild Rift. These additions aim to appeal to both competitive players and collectors alike.
The Vendetta expansion promises a significant influx of new content for Riftbound, combining gameplay innovations with visual enhancements. The simultaneous global release is also anticipated to foster a healthier competitive environment for the game's ongoing seasons.
