Gameplay footage from the cancelled Perfect Dark reboot, initially in development at The Initiative, has surfaced online more than a year after Microsoft confirmed the project's cancellation. The game was axed as part of broader layoffs at Microsoft and Xbox in 2025, with further difficulties impacting the company in 2026.
The leaked video, which appears to be sourced from a VFX artist with prior experience in game development, showcases various weapons, environments, and player abilities. Some of the footage includes basic level layouts, gunplay tests, and destructible elements, offering a look at what might have been.
The Perfect Dark reboot was first announced in December 2020. Development was handled by the new Xbox Game Studios team, The Initiative, with Crystal Dynamics later joining as a co-developer. The project was reportedly hampered by slow progress and a "very rough state" by May 2024. Despite the release of a gameplay trailer shortly after that report, which seemingly revitalized some hope, official word of its cancellation emerged later.
Reports indicated the game was planned with an episodic structure. Following its cancellation, there were unconfirmed suggestions that Take-Two Interactive might acquire the rights, but this deal reportedly did not materialize. The leaked footage provides a rare look at the game's potential before its ultimate demise.
