Legacy Games Storefront to Shut Down, 'Forever' Purchases May Be Lost

The online storefront Legacy Games, which specialized in bundling lesser-known indie and casual titles, is set to cease operations on February 28, 2027. The company's marketing famously promised that games purchased through its platform were "Yours to Keep Forever." However, this promise comes with a significant caveat: users must download and install their purchased games via the Legacy Games Launcher by the closure date. After February 28, 2027, games that have not been downloaded will no longer be accessible.

According to an FAQ page on the Legacy Games site, as reported by VGC, game-of-the-month deals will conclude on December 1, and any disc download codes sold by the company will become invalid after December 31. Customers are strongly advised to download all claimed games before the February 2027 deadline to retain access. Existing user points, rewards, and membership perks will expire at the end of the current year.

Legacy Games also maintained a partnership with Amazon's Luna streaming service. Games claimed through this partnership will continue to be supported, provided they were claimed before the aforementioned end dates. However, the core offering of directly purchased and downloadable games will be lost to users who do not act before February 28, 2027.

The impending shutdown has drawn criticism from some players, with discussions on platforms like Reddit highlighting concerns about the practice. Some users have expressed anxieties that other digital storefronts might follow a similar path, particularly those that emphasize long-term ownership, such as GOG. The situation underscores the inherent fragility of digital ownership, especially when tied to specific launchers and storefronts that may cease to exist, contrasting with the more enduring nature of DRM-free games that can be managed across personal storage devices.
