This older iteration of LEGO Mario sets relied on the figure's ability to produce sounds and music, and display simple animations on a chest-mounted LED screen. However, these features did not resonate strongly with playtesters, including children, who found the sets lacking in sustained engagement. Furthermore, the design constraints imposed by the need for interaction with the bulky Mario figure reportedly resulted in sets that were not visually appealing.
The newly announced sets, in contrast, are designed to the standard minifigure scale. They incorporate more conventional LEGO building and play elements found in successful themes like Star Wars and Harry Potter. This approach suggests a move towards a more traditional LEGO experience, grounded in the familiar aesthetics of the Mushroom Kingdom, rather than relying on unique interactive gimmicks.
Visually, the packaging for the new sets has been highlighted, featuring bold red and blue designs that pay homage to Mario's iconic branding. The Fire Mario & Bowser's Castle set box, for example, has been noted for its strong design. While these sets are still primarily intended for children, as indicated by their suggested age ranges, their minifigure scale and familiar LEGO mechanics are expected to make them more engaging and appealing than their predecessors.
This change in direction has generated optimism for the future of LEGO Mario sets, with the hope that they will better capture the appeal of the beloved Nintendo franchise within the LEGO system.
