LEGO PlayStation Nearly Matches Original Console's Scale, Features Interactive Details

The recently released LEGO PlayStation set achieves a near 1:1 scale recreation of Sony's original console, a fact confirmed through a hands-on comparison with the actual hardware. Designers have meticulously replicated the external dimensions, with the LEGO version standing only slightly taller than the original, a difference largely unnoticeable without direct side-by-side scrutiny.

The attention to detail extends to the front of the console, featuring functional memory card and controller ports. The LEGO controller, while possessing a slightly more blocky design than the original DualShock, can be plugged into the LEGO console, mirroring the real hardware. Pressing the power button on the LEGO model illuminates a translucent green brick, simulating the original console's power light. Similarly, the open button on the LEGO set operates the lid, just as it does on the authentic PlayStation.

A notable omission from the rear of the LEGO PlayStation is the absence of the RCA ports found on the original. However, ports for Serial I/O, AV Multi Out, and AC In are present. The console and controller also feature printed logos and text, a deliberate choice by LEGO to avoid the use of stickers, which the author notes could have detracted from the overall aesthetic.

Inside the LEGO PlayStation's lid, instead of a disc drive, are miniature dioramas representing the classic games Gran Turismo and Ape Escape. These can be detached and displayed separately, serving as a hidden detail for fans of those titles. The LEGO controller's cord is also shorter than the original, a practical adjustment for a display model.
