Dontnod Entertainment, the acclaimed studio behind the original Life Is Strange and more recent titles like Lost Records: Bloom and Rage and Aphelion, is experiencing significant financial difficulties. In its latest financial statement, the company acknowledged that its ability to continue operating without external funding is unlikely past January 2027.
The studio's revenue has halved year-on-year for the first half of 2026, a decline of 56 percent, totaling €6.1 million. This downturn is attributed to lower sales of its latest science fiction adventure game, Aphelion, compared to its previous release. While Dontnod has secured some investment for an unannounced narrative game based on a "major Netflix intellectual property," the current financial state has led to a sharp decrease in liquid assets.
This precarious financial situation has led Dontnod to declare that its "ability to continue operations depends partly on securing external financing to cover business operation and project development needs. This represents material uncertainty regarding the company’s ability to continue as a going concern beyond January 31, 2027." The company is exploring a strategic transformation that could involve reducing its workforce by up to 90 positions, though this has not been finalized. Efforts are also being refocused on a single project for its French teams in the hope of attracting new funding.
Despite Tencent holding a 41.9 percent stake in Dontnod since 2021, the publisher has not provided any short-term investments to aid the studio during this critical period. The long-standing developer now faces a challenging future, with significant layoffs appearing probable and the possibility of closure not being ruled out. The coming months will be crucial for Dontnod as it seeks the necessary funding to secure its operational future.
