Lightspeed LA, the developer behind the upcoming open-world action game Last Sentinel, has announced a significant shift in the title's creative and development direction. This change will unfortunately result in the reduction of staff at the studio.

A statement from Lightspeed LA indicated that the decision to alter the game's course was made following extensive internal reviews and play-testing, suggesting that early impressions did not align with the intended player experience. The studio emphasized that it remains committed to making games and that North America is a key region for its global gaming strategy, intending to continue investing in local talent and development.

Lightspeed LA is treating affected employees with compassion, offering comprehensive support and opportunities for internal transfers where possible. The company has not yet announced a release date for Last Sentinel.

Last Sentinel was initially revealed at The Game Awards in 2023, showcasing a gritty, dystopian Tokyo setting populated by cyborgs and robots. Players are set to assume the role of Hiromi Shoda, an operative tasked with enforcing order within the city. The game is designed as a narrative-focused, AAA open-world action experience.

This recent development follows other significant undertakings by Lightspeed, including the establishment of a motion-capture and virtual production studio in 2024, which saw the addition of acclaimed voice actor Troy Baker as performance director. In 2026, Lightspeed Studios also introduced its new IP development framework, aimed at building AAA titles at scale with the quality of a major production.

The news from Lightspeed LA comes on the same day that Psychonauts developer Double Fine also announced layoffs affecting a considerable portion of its staff.
