Lightspeed LA has announced a major shift in the creative and development direction for its upcoming AAA open-world action game, The Last Sentinel. This change will impact some members of the studio's staff, according to an official statement provided to IGN.
The studio revealed that the decision to alter the game's direction was made after "extensive internal reviews and play-testing," indicating that early impressions of the title may not have met expectations. Lightspeed LA stated that it remains committed to developing games and will continue to operate, but acknowledged that the new creative path for The Last Sentinel will affect certain roles within the company.
"We are treating affected team members with compassion and respect, offering comprehensive support and where possible the opportunity to transfer internally," the studio communicated. Lightspeed LA also reaffirmed its long-term commitment to North America, emphasizing its importance to the company's global gaming strategy and its continued investment in local talent and expertise.
The Last Sentinel was first revealed at The Game Awards in 2023, showcasing a gritty, dystopian Tokyo setting with cyborgs and robots. Players are set to take on the role of Hiromi Shoda, an operative tasked with enforcing order in the city. The game has also seen the establishment of a motion-capture and virtual production studio in 2024, with Troy Baker joining as performance director. In 2026, Lightspeed Studios also announced a new IP development framework aimed at building AAA titles like The Last Sentinel at scale.
Lightspeed LA has not announced a release date for The Last Sentinel at this time, and updates will be shared when ready. This news follows similar industry changes, including recent layoffs at Double Fine, the developer of Psychonauts.
