The planned live-action adaptation of the 1990s animated series Gargoyles for Disney+ has been canceled. Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman shared the news, stating that the project, which was being developed by James Wan's Atomic Monster production company, is no longer in development.
"Well, I know the live-action side of it is, uh, the Atomic Monster had the license to develop a live-action Gargoyles for Disney+, and that’s dead," Weisman told ComicsOnline. He clarified that while he had no information about any potential animated projects, "there are no current plans for live-action."
The original Gargoyles series, which first aired in 1994, followed a clan of nocturnal gargoyles who turn to stone during daylight hours and subsequently become defenders of modern-day New York City. Keith David voiced Goliath, the leader of the gargoyles, as well as his clone, Thailog.
Announced in 2023, the live-action reboot was set to have Gary Dauberman, writer for Annabelle and The Nun, serve as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Last year, Dauberman expressed optimism about adapting the series, telling Collider that the original cartoon "lends itself to a really cool live-action version" and that his vision would retain the show's inherent darkness.
Fans seeking to revisit the original series can still stream all three seasons of the animated Gargoyles on Disney+. An IGN retrospective from 2021 noted the show's significant impact, arguing that it "helped to redefine cartoon villainy in the ’90s."
