A lost Steam Deck OLED has found its way back to its owner after a nine-month odyssey, thanks to a chance discovery on an Amtrak train and the persistent efforts of a Reddit user and their mother-in-law. The handheld device was found by the user's mother-in-law, who, unfamiliar with the technology, kept it until a recent visit.
Initially, the finder, known on Reddit as u/vgalz, attempted to locate the owner through various subreddits, including those for Steam, Steam Deck, and Amtrak. Without success, they contacted Steam Support, which could not directly connect the finder with the owner but suggested reporting the device to law enforcement. Undeterred, vgalz also tried to add the potential owner on Steam and even commented on Reddit posts from users they suspected might be the owner, all without a positive result.
The breakthrough came when it was discovered that the original owner had indeed posted about the missing Steam Deck on the r/SteamDeck subreddit, but the post was made nine months prior and had been missed. The user's determined efforts eventually led to the verification of the device's owner.
In a heartwarming conclusion, the Steam Deck was returned to its rightful owner, ingeniously packaged inside a hand soap box. Vgalz expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating, "It took a little bit of effort but it feels amazingly good to have helped get this baby home." They also shared a broader message about the importance of kindness and doing good deeds for others.
During the time the Steam Deck was lost, Valve introduced significant price increases for its OLED models. The 512 GB OLED version rose from $549 to $789, and the 1 TB OLED model increased from $649 to $949. This price hike would have made the loss even more keenly felt by the owner.
As a reward for their commendable actions, vgalz received a gifted game from another Reddit user, turning a lost item story into a tale of community and generosity.
