Magic: The Gathering Announces Major Booster Pack Changes for 2027

Wizards of the Coast is set to implement significant alterations to Magic: The Gathering booster packs beginning in 2027 with the release of Nauctis: The Sunken Realm. These changes include the introduction of "God Packs" and a reduction in the number of cards found in Collector Boosters.

God Packs, a new type of booster, will exclusively contain rare and mythic rare cards, alongside alternate art variants of these rarities. These rare packs will appear in approximately one out of every 1000 regular Booster Packs and one out of every 300 Collector Boosters. Concurrently, Collector Boosters will see their card count reduced from 15 to 12, with "two commons and one uncommon" being removed from each pack. Wizards of the Coast stated that common and uncommon cards were the "least-exciting parts of these opening experiences" and that the reduction was necessary to accommodate new features like God Packs and the inclusion of Japan Showcase cards in regular Booster Packs.

Further adjustments affect foil cards in regular Booster Packs. A foil card will no longer be guaranteed in every pack. However, any foil cards found in these packs will be of rare or mythic rarity, meaning common and uncommon foil cards will no longer appear in standard Booster Packs. The scarcity of foil common and uncommon cards will increase, as they will primarily be found within the reduced-card-count Collector Boosters.

The term "Play Boosters" will also be retired, with the packs reverting to being called "Booster Packs." These new pack formats will debut with the launch of Nauctis: The Sunken Realm on February 5, available at local game stores and major retailers.
