Magic: The Gathering Announces Marvel's Darkhold Destiny as First 2027 Universes Beyond Set

Wizards of the Coast has revealed that the first Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond expansion set for 2027 will be Marvel's Darkhold Destiny. The announcement, made today at New York Comic Con, confirmed that the set will bring characters such as Doctor Strange, Thor, and Ghost Rider into the Magic: The Gathering multiverse to face cosmic villains including Hela and Dormammu.

Darkhold Destiny will offer both standard and Collector booster packs, alongside four pre-constructed Commander decks. These decks will be themed around a mix of Marvel heroes and villains, with one specifically focusing on the Midnight Sons.

During the hour-long panel, several cards were previewed, including Magic, who transforms into Darkchild, as well as Gargantos and the set's namesake, The Darkhold. The set's narrative is an original story developed in collaboration between designers at Marvel and Wizards of the Coast. Complementing this, a new Marvel Infinity comic series beginning in February will introduce a character created specifically for this Magic: The Gathering set.

New gameplay mechanics are also set to debut with Darkhold Destiny. The Vengeance feature will function similarly to an Adventure mechanic, allowing players to cast spells from their graveyard and return the associated permanent to the battlefield. Additionally, the Arcane subtype will return for spells.

Marvel's Darkhold Destiny is scheduled to launch on April 9, with availability planned for major retailers and local game stores.
