Magic: The Gathering is set to explore new frontiers within its own established multiverse in 2027 with three distinct in-universe expansions. The announcements, made during MagicCon Amsterdam, shift focus from the recent Universes Beyond collaborations to the game's rich internal lore and settings. These upcoming sets will introduce players to an underwater realm, revisit a fan-favorite plane for giant monster battles, and venture into the untapped genre of Afrofantasy.
Nauctis: The Sunken Realm
The year will kick off on February 5 with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, a plane entirely submerged beneath the ocean. This new setting will feature a variety of inhabitants, including humanoid sea creatures resembling real-world marine life such as seals and sharks, alongside merfolk and armored humans. Lead designer Mark Rosewater explained that the creatures of Nauctis will be categorized as either "humanoid" animals or their "normal" counterparts, allowing for both familiar and imaginative beings. The design team drew inspiration from various underwater narratives, finding ample creative freedom due to a perceived lack of deeply explored underwater worlds in existing media. Story lead Roy Graham noted that Nauctis marks the beginning of a new narrative arc, following the conclusion of a three-year story with October's Reality Fracture. This new setting offers a deliberate shift from high-stakes multiverse crises, focusing instead on the inhabitants, challenges, and conflicts native to the underwater world.
Kamigawa: Titanbreach
Following the underwater adventure, Magic: The Gathering will launch into colossal conflict with Kamigawa: Titanbreach on June 4. This expansion returns to the previously established plane of Kamigawa but pits its futuristic mechs against the monstrous inhabitants of Ikoria. Product architect Ben Bleiweiss described the set as focusing heavily on action, presenting Kamigawa in a new context against a massive crisis. While Ikoria was initially considered for a different set, the design team decided it was essential to bring its monsters into conflict with Kamigawa's mechs, a pairing seen as a natural evolution after the success of Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty and the previous Godzilla-themed crossover involving Ikoria. The development team carefully balanced the representation of both planes, ultimately framing the story as one of invasion, with Ikoria's monsters descending upon Kamigawa. A key design challenge involved ensuring that the mechanics for both the mechs and monsters felt authentic to their respective origins, and that the common cards would effectively contribute to world-building alongside the epic clashes.
Zhalfir: The Afrofantasy Realm
The final in-universe set for 2027, Zhalfir, is slated for release on October 1. This expansion introduces players to Zhalfir, a plane long referenced in Magic lore but rarely seen, and critically, marks the game's first foray into the Afrofantasy genre. The development team emphasized the significant care taken to represent Afrofantasy authentically. Senior executive producer Zakeel Gordon highlighted the focus on diverse interpretations of the genre, drawing inspiration from various African, Caribbean, and North African cultures, including Egyptian influences, with attention paid to details like hair and body types. The team enlisted Afrofantasy authors, designers, and creative consultants who had experience with similar challenges to ensure accuracy and depth. These experts were involved throughout the two-year development process, a commitment that extended the set's development time but was deemed crucial for honoring the genre. Lead designer Mark Rosewater acknowledged the immense pressure to
