Wizards of the Coast is set to implement substantial alterations to Magic: The Gathering booster packs beginning in 2027, starting with the "Nauctis: The Sunken Realm" set. The most notable change is the introduction of "God Packs," which will be seeded into every Magic: The Gathering set. These packs, mirroring a concept from the Pokémon Trading Card Game, will contain only rare or better cards. One God Pack will appear in approximately every 1,000 standard Booster Packs (formerly Play Boosters), and one in every 300 Collector Boosters.
Booster Packs are designed for players and are used in events like drafts, containing 14 playable cards with at least one foil card and one rare or mythic rare. Collector Boosters, aimed at collectors, are more expensive and offer a higher concentration of rare and mythic rare cards, along with numerous foil cards. The inclusion of God Packs has sparked concern among some players regarding the potential impact on the game's economy and accessibility, drawing parallels to the current volatility in the Pokémon TCG market.
To address concerns about God Packs in draft environments, special rules will be implemented at official tournament events. Players who open a God Pack will typically receive another pack as a replacement, ensuring a balanced play experience. Local game stores may have discretion over how these situations are handled.
Beyond God Packs, a significant shift involves the removal of foil commons and uncommons from standard Booster Packs starting next year. Collector Boosters will also see a reduction, with three fewer cards in total as two common and one uncommon foil slot are eliminated. Wizards of the Coast stated this change is intended to streamline the opening experience, noting that these cards are often skipped in content creator videos and to make room for cards that generate more excitement. The company is collecting feedback on these changes through its official Discord server.
