Wizards of the Coast has offered a significant glimpse into the future of Magic: The Gathering, announcing its complete lineup of in-universe sets for 2027 during MagicCon Amsterdam. The company also detailed an expanded MagicCon schedule for the coming year. The 2027 releases will feature a balanced mix of three in-universe sets and three Universes Beyond crossover sets, alternating throughout the year to avoid consecutive releases of either type.

2027 In-Universe Sets

The year will begin with "Nauctis: The Sunken Realm," scheduled for release on February 5, 2027. This set introduces a new undersea plane populated by merfolk and other aquatic life, with early visuals hinting at diver suits and unique twists on underwater environments. Nauctis is set to kick off a new multi-year story arc for Magic: The Gathering, following the conclusion of the current "Reality Fracture" storyline.

Following the underwater adventure, Magic will return to familiar planes with "Kamigawa: Titanbreach" on June 4, 2027. This set will see an Omenpath connect Kamigawa with the plane of Ikoria, resulting in a conflict between Ikoria's monsters and Kamigawa's inhabitants, featuring elements of giant robots and kaiju.

The final in-universe set for 2027 will be "Zhalfir," launching on October 1. Zhalfir returns as its own plane, but will incorporate changes influenced by recent events and the presence of New Phyrexia and Mirrodin. The time-bending character Teferi Akosa is confirmed to appear in this afrofantasy-inspired set.

Expanded MagicCon Presence

Wizards of the Coast also confirmed a global circuit of four MagicCons for 2027. The events are scheduled as follows:

  • MagicCon: Detroit - February 26-28, 2027
  • MagicCon: Tokyo (Japan) - May 14-16, 2027
  • MagicCon: Las Vegas - August 27-29, 2027
  • MagicCon: Amsterdam - December 3-5, 2027

Additionally, a new Mystery Booster set focused on Commander will be released. This set will include a mix of familiar cards alongside new ones, featuring novel mechanics.

Updates on Reality Fracture

While the focus was on 2027, the panel also provided details on "Reality Fracture," Magic's final in-universe set for the current year. The set's theme revolves around familiar cards and characters with twists due to Jace's multiverse-spanning actions, with variations of cards like Titanbones and Enlightened Confidant showcased. Reality Fracture will also receive a Secret Lair Bundle, which includes Collector and Play Boosters, basic lands, and exclusive promo cards reimagined by various artists.

Although the three unannounced Universes Beyond crossovers for 2027 were not revealed, further details are expected at MagicCon Atlanta later this year. With the confirmed in-universe sets and expanded convention schedule, players have a wealth of content and events to anticipate in the coming years.
