Magic: The Gathering Reveals New Marvel Crossover Set, Darkhold Destiny

Wizards of the Coast has announced a new Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond set titled Darkhold Destiny, featuring Marvel characters. The reveal was made via a teaser video released on YouTube and a panel at New York Comic Con. This marks the third Magic: The Gathering set based on Marvel properties.

The company revealed its in-universe sets for 2027 earlier this year at MagicCon in Las Vegas, but Darkhold Destiny is one of three planned Universes Beyond sets for the year. While details about the specific cards and mechanics within Darkhold Destiny remain scarce, the teaser art has been described as fitting Magic's aesthetic well, and potentially offering a more cohesive experience than previous Marvel sets.

The first two Marvel Universes Beyond sets, Spider-Man and Marvel Superheroes, received mixed reception. The Spider-Man set was considered a disappointment, while the Marvel Superheroes set was praised for its card selection and limited environment. Hopes are high that Darkhold Destiny will build upon the successes of the latter.

The panel at NYCC, which began at 7:45 pm ET / 4:45 pm PT, featured Mark Rosewater and others from Wizards of the Coast. Rosewater appeared on stage wearing a Marvel shirt and holding a replica of the Darkhold. The panel itself was not streamed, but live reporting provided initial details. The set's title suggests a connection to the Infinity Stones, with speculation that one of the stones will be a key feature in the new set.

Early art glimpsed from the teaser has generated optimism for the set's visual presentation and thematic integration into the Magic: The Gathering universe. Further details on Darkhold Destiny are expected as its release approaches.
