Wizards of the Coast has unveiled an ambitious roadmap for Magic: The Gathering in 2027, marked by a significant new story arc, the return to the fan-favorite plane of Kamigawa, and an exploration of an entirely new underwater realm. The announcements, made during MagicCon: Amsterdam, also include details on three Universes Beyond sets and a refreshed schedule for Magic: The Gathering conventions and competitive events.
New Story Arc and In-Universe Sets
The 2027 story arc will be supported by three in-universe sets. The year kicks off on February 5 with "Nauctis: The Sunken Realm," which will transport players to a vibrant, undersea world. This new plane is described as leaning heavily into high-fantasy, filled with merfolk, homarids, and aquatic creatures, though designers have ensured all mana colors will have distinct expressions within this sub-nautical environment. Notably, "Nauctis" will be the first major booster set to not feature any cards with the flying ability.
Following "Nauctis," June 4 will see the release of "Kamigawa: Titanbreach." This set marks a return to the beloved Japanese-inspired plane of Kamigawa, five years after its last appearance. "Titanbreach" will feature a massive conflict between Kamigawa and the plane of Ikoria, where an "Omenpath" allows a large portion of Ikoria to crash into Kamigawa, unleashing its monstrous inhabitants. The set is poised to deliver one of the largest-scale combats seen in Magic: The Gathering.
The final in-universe set for 2027 is "Zhalfir," scheduled for release on October 1. This set will explore the technologically advanced plane of Zhalfir, which was previously phased out of Dominaria. "Zhalfir" will introduce Teferi Akosa, master of chronomancy, and aims to showcase the plane's unique beauty, vibrant magic, and rich history. The set's development has been informed by cultural consultants, afrofuturist authors, and black history professors to ensure authenticity, drawing inspiration from the black diaspora and expanding the afrofantasy genre within Magic.
In addition to these in-universe sets, Wizards of the Coast confirmed that three Universes Beyond sets are planned for 2027, though details will be shared at a later date.
Community and Competitive Events
2027 will also see the return of Magic's Pro Tour Hall of Fame, with the ceremony scheduled to take place in Minneapolis from June 18-20. Further details about this event will be announced subsequently.
For players seeking community engagement, MagicCon will expand its reach with new locations and an increased number of events. MagicCon is set to visit two new US cities, return to Amsterdam, and make its debut in Asia with MagicCon: Tokyo. The confirmed dates and locations for 2027 are:
- MagicCon: Detroit - February 26-28
- MagicCon: Tokyo - May 14-16
- MagicCon: Las Vegas - August 27-29
- MagicCon: Amsterdam - December 3-5
Further details regarding these conventions and events are expected to be released in the coming months. Wizards of the Coast also revealed that Commander Mystery Boosters are on the way, featuring legendary reprints, 59 new cards for the Commander format, and new mechanics like "Rulebreaker," designed to facilitate Commander drafts.
