Magic: The Gathering's latest Universes Beyond set, Marvel Super Heroes, is enabling powerful interactions, including an economical infinite combo. The combination, centered on Mister Fantastic and The Locust God, can generate infinite creature tokens and card draw, potentially ending games by turn six with the right setup.
The strategy leverages the abilities of two specific cards. Mister Fantastic, a four-cost uncommon creature, has an ability that allows players to draw a card whenever tokens enter the battlefield. He is also relatively inexpensive, costing around 50 cents. The other key piece is The Locust God, a six-cost creature that costs approximately $7. Whenever a player draws a card, The Locust God creates a 1/1 insect creature token with flying and haste.
When both cards are in play, drawing a card triggers The Locust God to create an insect token. This token entering the battlefield then triggers Mister Fantastic, drawing another card. This process repeats, resulting in an infinite loop of card draw and creature token generation. Thanks to the haste ability on the insect tokens, players can immediately attack with their newly created army. Mister Fantastic's ability is also a "may" trigger, preventing players from accidentally decking themselves.
Beyond the primary combo, The Locust God has an activated ability that can draw cards on its own, which could help assemble the pieces or find Mister Fantastic when needed. With proper mana ramp, this combo can theoretically be executed as early as turn six. A notable defensive aspect of The Locust God is that it returns to its owner's hand from the graveyard at the beginning of the next end step after it dies, making it difficult for opponents to permanently remove.
For added protection, players can use cards like Swiftfoot Boots to safeguard Mister Fantastic, ensuring the combo's engine remains online. Mister Fantastic's token-generating synergy makes him a strong inclusion in Commander formats, where producing multiple tokens is a common strategy. It is anticipated that "Stretcho" will become a frequent sight in similar combo decks.
Another card that complements this Izzet-based strategy is Red Ghost, Intangible Genius. This villain from the Fantastic Four lore is a 2/3 creature with no blocking restrictions and ward 2. It generates 3/3 red Ape Villain tokens with haste whenever the player draws their second card each turn. Red Ghost's inclusion further enhances the potential for overwhelming opponents with a swarm of hasty creatures, fitting seamlessly alongside The Locust God and Mister Fantastic.
