Magic: The Gathering's New Marvel Card, The Darkhold, Rivals The One Ring's Power and Danger

Magic: The Gathering is set to introduce a formidable new artifact with the upcoming Marvel Universes Beyond set, Darkhold Destiny. This new card, The Darkhold, draws significant parallels to the impactful The One Ring card from the Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set, offering a powerful engine for card advantage that comes with considerable risks.

The One Ring, introduced in 2023, quickly became a defining card in Magic. This four-mana legendary artifact provides protection from all damage for a turn, subsequently accumulating burden counters. Each turn, it risks overwhelming the controller with escalating life loss, while its activated ability allows players to draw cards based on the number of counters. Its potent combination of protection and card advantage led to its ban in formats like Modern and Historic, and it was a notable "Game Changer" in Commander.

The Darkhold's Design and Mechanics

The Darkhold, however, is poised to challenge The One Ring's dominance. This new legendary artifact costs three mana, with two of those being black, making it slightly more restrictive in multicolor decks than the colorless The One Ring. Its primary ability allows the controller to tap it to place a sin counter on it, then draw a card for each sin counter. This activation also causes the player to lose life equal to the number of cards in their hand.

This mechanic mirrors The One Ring's design philosophy of offering powerful benefits that escalate in cost and risk. However, The Darkhold's life loss is tied to the size of the player's hand, potentially leading to a more rapid depletion of life points if not managed carefully. The introduction of "sin counters" also opens up numerous existing Magic interactions, such as effects that double counters or proliferate abilities that add more counters.

Cards like Inexorable Tide, which proliferates when a spell is cast, or those from the Final Fantasy 10 Commander deck Counter Blitz, which focuses on counter manipulation, could interact with The Darkhold. Even specific cards like Sin, Unending Cataclysm could potentially interact with sin counters, though its color identity might limit its use with The Darkhold.

A Dangerous Win Condition

Beyond its card-drawing capabilities, The Darkhold possesses a second, more devastating activated ability that costs eight mana (six generic, two black) and can be cast as a sorcery. This ability sets every player's life total to the lowest life total among all players. When combined with its first ability, which drains life to draw cards, players can strategically lower their own life total to a precarious level before activating this game-altering effect.

Once all players are brought to a low life total, numerous symmetrical damage effects can then serve as finishers. Spells like Flame Rift, Slagstorm, or Acidic Soil can drastically reduce remaining life points. Creatures like Exocrine or even Coalhauler Swine, combined with effects like Blasphemous Act, offer additional avenues to close out the game.

However, these finishers also affect the controller. To circumvent this, strategies involve cards like Platinum Emperion, which prevents life total changes, or Teferi's Protection in black-white decks. The most potent solution appears to be Platinum Angel, which prevents players from losing the game. With Platinum Angel on the battlefield, a player can use The Darkhold's abilities to reach a negative life total, and then activate The Darkhold's second ability, effectively causing all other players to lose the game while they are protected from losing themselves.

The Darkhold presents a design similar to The One Ring, offering immense power with an inherent risk of self-destruction. However, its mechanics, particularly the devastating second ability, position it as a potentially more dangerous and table-wiping alternative.
