Wizards of the Coast is continuing its print-to-demand strategy for Magic: The Gathering's Secret Lair product line following a successful test of a 24-hour limited order window. The policy aims to address issues with highly sought-after drops selling out immediately, ensuring that all customers who order within the designated timeframe will receive their product.
Matthew Hodgins, head of Secret Lair, stated that the recent Hatsune Miku Commander deck release, which utilized this 24-hour window, “did exactly the job we wanted it to do.” The goal is to make unique and in-demand products more accessible to players, a response to negative feedback from previous drops like Goblin Storm and Dandân that sold out rapidly. "If you ordered inside the window, you're getting a deck. That's the whole point, and it's the part I'm happiest about," Hodgins explained in a blog post.
Despite the overall success, Hodgins acknowledged areas for improvement. These include optimizing queue throttling and exploring new North American shipping methods. A significant challenge remains backorder fulfillment, where customers who purchase after the initial pre-printed stock is depleted may face waiting months for their order. Hodgins confirmed that resolving this issue is a priority, stating, "it should be better, and we're working on it."
Secret Lair will continue to experiment with the 24-hour limited order window in upcoming releases. The next test case will be the Secret Lair Commander Deck: Odds and Ends, with further details to be announced soon. This release will serve as another opportunity to gather data to refine future 24-hour sales and to inform the potential development of a dedicated Secret Lair storefront. Such a storefront could streamline the purchasing process and increase transparency for customers.
