Magic: The Gathering's Reality Fracture Commander Deck Praised as One of the Most Powerful Ever

Magic: The Gathering's Reality Fracture set concludes a major story arc with its latest Commander preconstructed deck, Multiverse Reforged. While the set itself features alternate-reality versions of iconic characters, the focus for Commander players is on the single deck provided, a move Wizards of the Coast attributes to ensuring a balanced release.

Gavin Verhey, Game Designer on Magic: The Gathering, explained that releasing multiple Commander decks can lead to significant power disparities, where one deck is highly sought after while another lingers on shelves. This was a factor in the decision to concentrate resources into one exceptionally strong offering for Reality Fracture. "We tend to run into problems when we release two Commander decks, and one is vastly more exciting than the other," Verhey stated, referencing past sets where this issue arose.

Instead of two decks, Wizards opted to create a single, four-color deck with a splashy theme, incorporating new cards and featuring an alternate-reality Jace as the Planeswalker Commander. Verhey noted that the development team internally views Multiverse Reforged as potentially one of the most powerful preconstructed decks ever released.

"I think it's kind of funny that people see it as a toolkit," Verhey said, "because many internally believe this precon is among the most powerful we've ever released!" He suggested that the deck's theme, which allows for a high number of individually cool legendary creatures, contributes to its perceived versatility and strength out of the box. This approach could pave the way for future sets to explore similar themes featuring numerous new legends.
