Wizards of the Coast has provided a first look at the upcoming Magic: The Gathering Star Trek set, scheduled for a November 20, 2026, official release. Prereleases will begin a week earlier, on November 13, at game stores within the Wizards Play Network. The Universes Beyond set spans all 60 years of Star Trek's history, from the original series to modern entries like Discovery and Lower Decks, and will even represent the J.J. Abrams films.
New Mechanics and Gameplay
The set introduces several new mechanics inspired by the Star Trek franchise. Dilemma cards present players with choices, mirroring the tough decisions often faced by Starfleet officers. These cards function similarly to classic modal spells, allowing players to choose between different effects, such as countering a spell or stunning a creature and drawing a card, as seen with "Consider the Prime Directive."
The Federation mechanic highlights the collaborative nature of the United Federation of Planets. It is based on the number of different non-Borg creature types a player controls, emphasizing that the Borg operate outside this alliance. The Borg faction is represented by the Assimilate mechanic, which allows players to put a creature onto the battlefield under their control as a Borg artifact creature, enhanced with a +1/+1 counter.
Spacecraft mechanics, previously introduced in Magic's Edge of Eternity set, will be prominently featured. The set will also include ten classic shock land reprints and 10 Sagas, each representing iconic Star Trek episodes such as "Amok Time" from the Original Series and "In the Pale Moonlight" from Deep Space Nine. While the Explore mechanic was considered, it has been integrated only for Captain Kathryn Janeway to represent Voyager's journey. Phasing will also appear on a Saga titled "The City on the Edge of Forever."
Product Offerings and Commander Decks
For newcomers to Magic: The Gathering, the Star Trek set will offer introductory products like a set of five welcome decks and a beginner box. The main set will be available through draft and collector boosters. Additional products include a draft night bundle, two scene boxes, and a "Beam Me Up" bundle.
Four Commander decks will be available in both regular and Collector's Edition versions. "We Are the Borg" is an Esper (white-blue-black) deck led by the Borg Queen, utilizing the Assimilate mechanic to convert opponent's creatures into Borg artifact creatures. "Klingon Fury," a Mardu (red-white-black) deck led by Worf, focuses on an aggressive playstyle. "Landing Party" is a Bant (green-white-blue) deck helmed by Spock, drawing inspiration from the original 1960s series and incorporating the landfall mechanic. "Federation Fleet," a Jeskai (blue-red-white) deck led by Captain Jean-Luc Picard, emphasizes card draw and spacecraft synergy, with iconic ships like the Enterprise expected to be included.
Collectible Chase Cards
Marking a significant first for Magic: The Gathering, the Star Trek set will feature the inaugural official autograph cards. Seven characters will be represented, with signatures from the actors who portrayed them. So far, William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk and Kate Mulgrew as Captain Kathryn Janeway have been revealed. The remaining five autograph cards, each limited to only 200 copies, will be exclusively distributed through Collector Boosters.
