Magic: The Gathering is set to introduce its first-ever autograph cards with the upcoming Universes Beyond Star Trek set, scheduled for release on November 13. These highly collectible cards will feature signatures from seven iconic actors, with only 200 copies of each card being produced. They will be distributed exclusively through Collector Boosters.
During a recent WeeklyMTG stream, Wizards of the Coast revealed two of the featured actors: William Shatner, who will sign cards as Captain James T. Kirk, and Kate Mulgrew, who will sign cards as Captain Kathryn Janeway. Principal game designer Gavin Verhey noted that the autograph recipients are not limited to captains, hinting at other significant characters from the Star Trek franchise.
The Star Trek set will include premium products such as Collector’s Edition Commander decks and Scene Boxes that capture memorable moments from both Star Trek: The Next Generation and the J.J. Abrams film series. The introduction of autograph cards is expected to generate significant collector interest and resale speculation, potentially mirroring the impact of unique cards like The One Ring from The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set.
While the identities of the remaining five actors have not yet been confirmed, speculation suggests a range of possibilities from popular Star Trek series. Given that the actors must be living, figures from Star Trek: The Next Generation such as John de Lancie (Q) and Jonathan Frakes (William T. Riker) are strong contenders. There is also anticipation for potential inclusions from Deep Space Nine, Discovery, and Strange New Worlds.
