Magic: The Gathering's Troubled Zeta Set to Return After Disastrous Launch

Wizards of the Coast has confirmed that Magic: The Gathering's Secret Lair x MSCHF: The Zeta Set, which suffered a problematic release in September, will be made available again. The company announced that a 24-hour ordering window will open on December 9, aiming to ensure that all interested players can acquire the set.

The Initial Drop's Failings

The original release of The Zeta Set was marred by significant issues. Players encountered long queues and were unable to complete purchases as the product quickly sold out. Wizards of the Coast issued an apology at the time, stating they were investigating the cause of the problems, which could have been due to internal systems or external interference.

Matthew Hodgins, director of Secret Lair, provided further details on the situation. He explained that the disruption was not simply a matter of the product selling out too quickly. An external service disruption affected the launch's supporting systems early on, impacting the entire sale even after stability was restored. Hodgins made the decision to pause the queue to prevent further issues with processing orders. While inventory systems initially indicated sufficient stock, a large backlog meant that only a limited number of orders could be fulfilled when the sale resumed, leaving many customers waiting for extended periods without adequate information.

For those who successfully pre-ordered The Zeta Set in September, shipping is expected to commence in North America on November 5 and in Europe and the UK on December 8.

A Second Chance for Collectors

The upcoming December 9 sale will operate on a 24-hour limited order window. Hodgins assured players that this approach is intended to guarantee fulfillment for everyone who places an order within that timeframe. Shipments for this second batch of The Zeta Set are scheduled for the latter half of 2027.

Wizards of the Coast is also offering an option for customers who pre-ordered in September but no longer wish to receive the set. These individuals can cancel their existing orders by submitting a ticket to Wizards by October 9. The company stated that these cancellations will be processed without question, acknowledging that the circumstances may have changed the product's appeal for some buyers.
