Magic: The Gathering's Secret Lair project is set to broaden its appeal with a diverse array of upcoming card drops, featuring collaborations ranging from popular video games like Stardew Valley and Hatsune Miku to iconic franchises such as Marvel and The Hobbit. The initiative aims to attract a wider audience by embracing a variety of intellectual properties and artistic styles.
At MagicCon Amsterdam, Secret Lair's principal product lead, Steve Sunu, discussed the philosophy behind the drops, emphasizing "authenticity" as a core principle. The team strives to honor both the existing fans of the featured universes and the Magic: The Gathering community by creating unique intersections of these worlds. Sunu highlighted that many projects are considered internally, with only those meeting a specific quality bar seeing release.
The panel revealed over a dozen new drops, including a preconstructed Commander deck themed around Hatsune Miku, the popular vocaloid singer. This follows the success of previous Miku-themed seasonal drops, offering Miku fans a direct way to engage with Magic: The Gathering and potentially introducing new players to the game. Sunu noted that the deck is designed to be an accessible entry point for Miku enthusiasts interested in Magic.
Another significant reveal was a trio of drops inspired by the 10th anniversary of the farming simulation game Stardew Valley. Product architect Zakeel Gordon led the design, expressing passion for the IP. Two of these drops will feature artwork directly from Stardew Valley with a UI-emulating frame, while a third will showcase the game's scenes in a traditional Magic art style, with the original game developer, Eric Barone, involved in the process.
The world of The Hobbit will also be represented through several Secret Lair drops. While details were scarce, one revealed set focuses on seven Food token cards, each depicting a different meal from a Hobbit's daily routine. Sunu defended the concept, stating that the authenticity and care invested in a drop are more important than whether the cards are spells, lands, or tokens. Additionally, a new "silvery ink" foil treatment will be showcased, offering a subtle visual effect on cards like one depicting Bilbo in his invisible form.
The Marvel Super Heroes franchise is slated for four distinct drops. These will include cards featuring Hulk's various personas, art by popular comic artist Dan Hipp, and a set dedicated to Marvel Pets. A particularly well-received drop reimagines famous Marvel couples, such as Rogue and Gambit, and Captain America and Peggy Carter, in the style of romance novel covers. Sunu expressed confidence in this concept, noting the team's love for these characters and moments, and their excitement in bringing them to life in this new context. The drop featuring Thanos and Death on a Grave Pact card was cited as an example of successfully blending card mechanics with the IP's narrative.
A surprising addition is a drop featuring Lofi Girl, the iconic YouTube personality known for her lofi hip hop radio streams. The cards, including one for "Careful Study," will feature original artwork created specifically for Magic, maintaining the character's authentic aesthetic. The choice of "Careful Study" over the more commonly played "Rhystic Study" was explained as a deliberate effort to align with the character's thematic elements.
Lastly, the Artist Series will highlight the distinctive styles of Gene Luen Yang, known for his work on Journey to the West, Robin Eisenberg, whose art has appeared on Adult Swim and Netflix, and veteran Magic artist Ian Miller. Yang's drop connects his existing work with the classic Chinese novel, while Eisenberg's offers a new audience exposure to her art within the Magic framework. For established artists like Miller, the focus is on enabling them to create art that aligns with their personal passions.
The Masters of the Universe franchise is also receiving a Secret Lair treatment, with initial art pieces revealed. Sunu praised the collaboration with Mattel, hinting at exciting artwork, including a depiction of She-Ra by Jack Hughes.
Most of these Secret Lair drops are scheduled for release throughout July and August, with a special Superdrop featuring the Marvel, Lofi Girl, and Artist Series drops planned for September. The Stardew Valley drops are set for July 27, the Hatsune Miku Commander deck on August 10, and The Hobbit drops on August 17.
