Wizards of the Coast has revealed the first wave of "wild cards" for its upcoming Mystery Booster: Commander Edition, a new Magic: The Gathering product designed to push the boundaries of Commander deckbuilding and gameplay. The set will feature more than 50 exclusive legendary creatures and hundreds of reprints, with the new original commanders focusing on unusual mechanics, niche archetypes, and multiplayer-focused effects.

One of the most striking examples of the set's experimental design is Ashaya's Enduring Bond, a legendary sorcery that can be used as a commander. This green and red spell offers a scalable "Discover" effect, allowing players to exile cards from their library based on the mana invested. While it possesses the potential for powerful combos, its effectiveness hinges on precise deck construction to avoid whiffing on low-mana-value cards.

The Mystery Booster: Commander Edition also delves into Magic's history, bringing back forgotten characters and mechanics. Davvol, Evincar of Rath, an obscure villain from the late 1990s, receives his first card, enabling Golgari (black and green) aristocrats or go-wide strategies by providing black mana for each creature played at the cost of life. This design directly references an older card, Carnival of Souls, and rewards players for having life gain to offset the drawback.

Another notable inclusion is Nephilim Epochal, which finally provides an official commander for the previously unofficial four-color Nephilim archetype. This legendary creature not only leads a deck but actively tutors and buffs the existing Nephilim cards, a significant nod to players who have kept this niche strategy alive for two decades.

Mystery Booster: Commander Edition also experiments with tribal synergies, combining disparate creature types. Olag and Miau, New Friends, pairs cats and zombies, with their creatures buffing each other and dealing direct damage upon entering the battlefield. The set also features Seluma, Light of Aysen, which uses a "Rulebreaker" mechanic to bypass color restrictions, allowing any Angel in Magic's history to be included in the deck and reanimating them directly to the battlefield regardless of mana cost.

Beyond creature-based strategies, the set introduces political and puzzle-like elements. Zagorka, Mother of Sanctum, a Temur (green, blue, red) commander, appears to offer ramp to opponents by letting them create a land, but it punishes players who attack Zagorka. This creates a political tool for building a board state undisturbed. The Unluckiest Planeswalker, a mono-red card, functions as an aura commander that ignores color identity restrictions for enchantments, while also providing ramp, card draw, and a protective goblin token.

These designs, many of which would be too disruptive for a traditional Standard set, are said to fit naturally within the Mystery Booster: Commander Edition product, which is built to celebrate the game's more eccentric and complex corners. Mystery Booster: Commander Edition is scheduled for release in November 2026.
