Wizards of the Coast is expanding Magic: The Gathering's crossover appeal with its latest Secret Lair 'superdrop,' the Corn Maze Superdrop. This release introduces beloved characters and themes from Jim Henson's Labyrinth, a K-Pop Demon Hunter concept, and Marvel Zombies to the long-running trading card game.
The Corn Maze Superdrop, timed for a Halloween release, moves away from horror themes seen in previous collaborations like the Junji Ito drop, opting for a lighter tone across its collections. The most anticipated additions are expected to be the Labyrinth and K-Pop Demon Hunter sets, alongside a Marvel Zombies-themed offering.
The Labyrinth Returns
The Secret Lair x Jim Henson's Labyrinth collection is the centerpiece of this superdrop, featuring three distinct sets. "Fear Me, Love Me" focuses on Goblin tribal cards, headlined by Muxus, Goblin Grandee, reimagined as Jareth, the Goblin King, with artwork depicting David Bowie. This set also includes a version of "Claim the Firstborn" as "The Kidnapping of Toby." Additionally, it contains a Trinisphere card, noted for its unique artwork of Bowie with orbs, though its utility in a goblin deck is questioned.
A second Labyrinth set, "Through the Labyrinth," showcases art that is described as gorgeous but potentially difficult to parse during gameplay. This collection includes Leveler, which can be paired with cards like The Beamtown Bullies or Thassa's Oracle for combo potential.
New Faces and Familiar Universes
The K-Pop Demon Hunters set introduces cards with significant combo potential, notably featuring Freed From The Real and Underworld Breach. The latter card has seen bans in multiple formats due to its power.
The Marvel Zombies drop centers on Zombie tribal cards. While featuring characters like Zombie Thor and Zombie Scarlet Witch, the source suggests that the cards may not justify the price for most players unless they are particularly passionate about the Marvel Zombies theme.
Additional Collectibles
Beyond the major crossovers, the Corn Maze Superdrop includes other notable sets. The "Manufactured Grounds" set by See Machine adds new art to the original artifact land cycle from Mirrodin, praised for its aesthetic appeal. The "Peace, Love and Treefolk" drop provides a significant reprint of Timber Protector, its first since the Lord of the Rings commander decks.
The Corn Maze Superdrop will be available for purchase starting October 12 at 9am PT / 12pm ET. Orders exceeding $199 will include a Labyrinth-themed Maze of Ith card as a bonus.
