Marathon creative director Julia Nardin has officially refuted rumors suggesting a potential merger between Bungie's upcoming extraction shooter and its long-running sci-fi looter shooter, Destiny 2. Nardin addressed the speculation directly on X, stating, "As someone who's worked on both Destiny and Marathon, I can confirm that the 'leak' about us merging the two IPs is fake." She further elaborated, "They share a lot of the same Bungie DNA, but like siblings they're also their own independent entities. Please don't believe everything you read online."
Nardin's statement directly counters claims that originated from a 4chan post, which later circulated on the Marathon subreddit. These alleged leaks proposed internal discussions about reworking Marathon and Destiny into a single intellectual property, with Marathon intended to foreshadow future threats for Destiny. The rumor also suggested gameplay changes and a potential shift to a free-to-play model for Marathon.
Nardin's background lends significant weight to her denial. Prior to her current role as creative director for Marathon, she contributed to the narrative of multiple Destiny 2 expansions and served as associate narrative director for Destiny: Rising. Her comment was amplified when reposted by Bungie comms lead Dylan Gafner, known within the community as dmg04.
Bungie is currently focused on repositioning Marathon as a distinct survival experience. The studio recently delayed the game's September content update to December, with a smaller refresh planned for October. This adjustment, alongside the abandonment of a strict seasonal schedule, is part of an effort to evolve Marathon into a more unique and dynamic offering. With the Destiny 2 team reportedly reduced and no immediate new projects on the horizon, Bungie appears invested in ensuring Marathon's success as a standalone title.
