Marathon's new update today brings the debut of Vault Breaker, an experimental PvE mode that will be available for two weeks. This mode functions as a roguelite experience, existing separately from Marathon's standard extraction shooter gameplay, and is not a simple PvE toggle for existing modes. Vault Breaker is set to conclude on August 4.
The Cryo Archive map serves as the setting for Vault Breaker, which supports solo play as well as duos and trios. Player Runner level is not a barrier to entry; anyone can participate in this new mode. Within each match, players are tasked with raiding Vaults and confronting UESC enemies, with the difficulty of Vaults increasing over time. A key element of the roguelite structure is the ability to increase player power between runs. The decision to extract from a run is left to the player.
Players will utilize a Sponsored Kit, chosen each time they enter Vault Breaker, as custom loadouts are not supported. In-match progression allows players to earn a currency known as Vault Data, which is used to upgrade these Sponsored Kits for subsequent runs. While the primary objective remains successful extraction without succumbing to threats, any gear acquired within a Vault Breaker run cannot be carried over for use in Marathon's standard PvP modes. Similarly, gear from regular modes cannot be used in Vault Breaker, preventing players from farming for advantages. Upon extraction, all acquired items, with the exception of event currency and rewards, are converted into Vault Data. This system incentivizes repeated play, as a greater investment in Vault Data results in a stronger starting Sponsored Kit for future runs.
Vault Data can also be used outside of the Vault Breaker mode. The Vault Breaker Armory allows players to purchase items and gear for use in Marathon's normal rotation of modes using the same Vault Data earned within the PvE experience. To encourage participation, Marathon will award Tier One Vault Data for defeating a USEC Commander during a run, even if the player does not successfully extract.
Bungie is also developing a more comprehensive PvE mode planned for Season 3, though details regarding its integration with the main game and specific gameplay mechanics are still undisclosed. This news follows the recent departure of Marathon director Joe Ziegler from Bungie and a period of layoffs impacting several development teams within the studio.
