Bungie has outlined a significant evolution for its upcoming shooter, Marathon, which will move "beyond extraction" to encompass a broader range of gameplay experiences. The developer announced that the game will incorporate new modes, a social hub, and a visually altered environment, aiming to broaden its appeal beyond its initial concept as a high-stakes player-vs-environment-vs-player (PvEvP) title.
Marathon was originally conceived as a "cutthroat, winner-takes-all PvEvP experience," according to a recent blog post. Bungie aims to retain this core thrill for existing players while introducing new ways for others to engage with the game world and find challenges suited to their preferences. This expansion includes the development of a Player-vs-Environment (PvE) mode, which is slated for the game's next major update, codenamed Symbiosis. Additionally, a PvP Team Deathmatch mode is planned, offering a more accessible and lower-commitment option for players to hone their skills without the risks associated with full extraction runs.
The update will also introduce a new character, Bishop, described as a "high-performance robot samurai" designed for speed, surprise, and swift melee combat. The Perimeter zone is set to undergo a substantial visual transformation, including a fungus infestation that will alter the landscape, open new pathways, and give the area a more distinct identity. Bungie also plans to introduce an entirely new zone in March.
A highly anticipated feature, a social hub, is also scheduled for a March release. This space, sponsored by CyAc, will include a firing range and serve as a central area where players can meet, prepare for missions, test weapons and abilities, and familiarize themselves with their chosen "shell" under the observation of ONI. This strategic shift toward a more varied live service model mirrors Destiny's approach, as Bungie seeks to diversify Marathon's offerings beyond its initial extraction-focused gameplay.
