Joseph Ziegler, the game director for Bungie's extraction shooter Marathon, has announced his departure from the studio. Ziegler confirmed his last day overseeing the project was July 17, 2026, in a statement shared on X/Twitter. He stated that assistant game director Del Chafe III will take over leadership of the game, working alongside creative director Julia Nardin.

"Both of them have been operating in a strong leadership capacity for the team and are ready to guide Marathon into the next chapter with an even better and brighter future," Ziegler said of Chafe and Nardin. He expressed pride in their readiness to lead the project, calling it a "crazy little world we've created together."

While Ziegler did not disclose the specific reasons for his departure, he indicated that he is moving on to "something new, somewhere else" and plans to share further details soon. The timing of his exit comes as Marathon continues through its second season, with Season 3 slated for release in September.

Ziegler extended gratitude to the Marathon community and his colleagues at Bungie for their support throughout the development of the extraction shooter. "The mission will continue in new and surprising ways so stay tuned for what this team has in store for you!" he wrote, referencing the game's ongoing development.

Marathon's development has faced challenges in recent months. In May, Sony reported a significant financial impairment loss tied to Bungie's underperformance. This news followed reports of substantial layoffs at Bungie in the previous month, which affected members of both the Destiny and Marathon teams. Sony had previously confirmed "significant" workforce reductions at the studio. Additionally, Sony recently settled a lawsuit with former Marathon game director Christopher Barrett, who was dismissed from the company amid accusations of sexual misconduct.

Despite these hurdles, Marathon has received critical acclaim, with IGN awarding it a 9/10 in its review, calling it "Amazing."
