Bungie is set to launch Marathon's first dedicated player-versus-environment mode, Vault Breaker, next week as part of the game's mid-season 2 update. This new mode, described as an experimental PvE roguelite, will be accessible for a limited two-week period, beginning July 21 and concluding on August 4.

Vault Breaker tasks players with infiltrating the Cryo Archive, either solo or in teams of up to three. The objective is to tackle increasingly challenging vaults over multiple runs. During these expeditions, players will collect Vault Data, a new in-game currency. This currency can be used to upgrade a unique sponsored kit within a new Vault Breaker armory, or for purchasing items and gear outside of the mode. The mode's limited availability has led to speculation that it is primarily serving as a test for future PvE content.

Beyond Vault Breaker, the mid-season update will also bring several other changes and additions. The iconography for implants is receiving another refresh, aiming to improve immediate legibility. The Cradle will feature a new evolution system that allows players to prestige their stats and unlock new runner-style shells. Additionally, the assassin shell will gain the ability to toggle invisibility, the thief's drone will highlight players, and a new toggle will automatically equip sponsored kits. These smaller adjustments are intended to enhance the overall gameplay experience.
