Marathon's New PvE Mode 'Vault Breaker' Arrives July 21, Season 3 Set for September

Bungie has announced that Marathon's new PvE mode, titled Vault Breaker, will launch on July 21 as part of the game's next mid-season update. This update will also include the commencement of Season 3 on September 22.

Momentous changes are coming to Bungie's extraction shooter, Marathon, with the introduction of its "experimental" PvE mode, Vault Breaker. Players will be able to embark on expeditions into the Cryo Archive, the map utilized for the game's most challenging raid-like content. The mode can be tackled solo or with a group of allies, featuring a distinct progression system designed to empower players before they face the final vault. Participation in Vault Breaker will require a special Sponsored Kit.

Gear and items acquired within the vaults will be lost upon extraction, with the exception of Vault Data. This new in-game currency, obtainable within vaults, can be exchanged for upgrades to Vault Breaker Sponsored Kits and for gear usable in other game modes. Bungie stated this system is intended to allow players to experience the Cryo Archive without introducing a surplus of high-power, low-risk loot into the game's economy.

The mid-season update will also introduce the initial version of the Cradle Evolution system. This feature allows players to reset their maxed-out Cradle to zero, granting an additional maximum Energy point and exclusive cosmetic items. The update is further set to incorporate various quality-of-life improvements, including tuning adjustments and the addition of player profile statistics.

While Season 2 has just begun, Bungie has already slated the start of Season 3 for September 22. This next season promises to bring a significant influx of new content and modifications to the extraction shooter.

These developments follow Bungie's efforts to broaden Marathon's player base, as the game has encountered challenges in player retention and acquisition. The studio appears hopeful that expanding beyond PvP extraction content may attract a wider audience. However, the game's reception has remained mixed, with a recent free trial during Season 2 failing to significantly impact player numbers. The success of future updates in turning the tide for Marathon remains to be seen.
