Bungie has announced a series of significant changes for its upcoming shooter, Marathon, including a substantial delay for its next major update, a renewed focus on PvE content, and a departure from its planned seasonal release model. The next major update, originally slated for September 22, has been pushed back to December 8.

This upcoming update will introduce permanent PvE content, a social hub featuring a firing range, and an experimental Team Deathmatch mode. To prepare for these changes, a smaller update on October 6 will reset player progression and the in-game economy.

Bungie stated that the move away from seasonal content is intended to allow the development team more time to focus on creating new content. The studio has acknowledged player feedback regarding the need for greater depth, variety, and stronger progression systems, and is actively working to implement these improvements.

Marathon has struggled to gain traction with players since its launch earlier this year. The decision to end support for Destiny 2 to concentrate efforts on Marathon was a controversial one, and early results suggest it has not yet revitalized the game. Bungie's attempt to shift Marathon's identity by moving away from its extraction elements may not significantly alter player perception.

The delay places Marathon's next major update shortly after the releases of Grand Theft Auto 6 and Modern Warfare 4, the latter of which will feature its own extraction mode, DMZ. The future for Bungie beyond Marathon's updates remains uncertain, with no other major projects currently in full production. Hopes for Destiny 3 were reportedly dashed earlier this summer, coinciding with significant layoffs at Bungie that affected developers working on Destiny 2.
