Bungie has announced significant changes coming to its shooter Marathon, aiming to move the game beyond its current extraction-based gameplay and attract a broader player base. In a recent blog post, the developer detailed a roadmap focused on creating more "approachable" experiences with "different levels of intensity and commitment."
The initial phase of this transformation begins in October with a refresh of the Nightfall mode. This update will introduce a permanent, free rewards pass, recurring sponsored kit queues that allow players to matchmake with free gear instead of their own equipment, and extended access to the end-game Cryo Archive.
December will see a major push for Marathon's PvE mode, Symbiosis, which Bungie describes as its "first significant step into the future" and a "lower pressure" way to engage with the game. This update also includes an experimental Team Deathmatch mode for players not interested in the core extraction loop. A new shell, a redesigned Perimeter map with new zones, a new PvE pinnacle encounter, and a fungal aesthetic are also planned for December.
More substantial changes are slated for March. While specific details remain scarce, Bungie is focusing on an interconnected system of permanent PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences. The developer also plans a new onboarding experience, a more focused questline and narrative, a new zone, and a new alien enemy. These updates aim to offer "different levels of intensity and commitment," more options for solo players and crews, and experiences designed for cooperation, competition, and survival.
This strategic shift represents a departure from Marathon's original concept and core extraction experience, which, while lauded by some, proved too challenging for many players. Despite a strong initial performance, Marathon has seen dwindling player numbers on PC. Bungie, which is also implementing changes to Destiny 2, hopes that by increasing Marathon's appeal while retaining the extraction option for dedicated fans, the game can find a more robust future.
