Nintendo has released a substantial update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch 2, introducing a suite of new features and improvements, including expanded multiplayer options and enhanced visuals. The update, version 4.0.0, addresses the 71 million players of the 2017 title, bringing support for the upcoming console.

Enhanced Multiplayer and Visuals

A key addition is the support for up to eight players in local split-screen multiplayer on the Nintendo Switch 2, doubling the previous capacity of four players on the original Switch. This allows for significantly more chaotic racing experiences with friends and family, requiring up to seven controllers connected to the system. At least one Joy-Con 2 controller or a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is necessary for eight-player sessions.

The update also introduces clearer visuals tailored for the Switch 2's display and high-resolution televisions, alongside faster loading times, promising a smoother overall experience. For those who own the Booster Course Pass, a new "96 Races" endurance challenge has been added to the "VS Race" settings. This mode spans all 96 available courses, including those from the six-part DLC.

Further enhancing the multiplayer offerings, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe now supports CameraPlay on the Switch 2, allowing players to optionally display their live camera feed during races. This feature requires a separate USB camera and can be used in multiplayer and online play sessions, with footage and audio shared only with GameChat members.

Gameplay Adjustments

Beyond the new hardware support and multiplayer enhancements, the update includes a general increase in player speed during races, equivalent to the effect of collecting one coin. Additionally, players using the Boo item will no longer slow down when entering off-road areas while invisible.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe originally launched for the Nintendo Switch in April 2017. This latest update signifies Nintendo's continued commitment to supporting its best-selling titles across console generations.
