Nintendo has released a significant update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, originally launched in 2017, introducing enhanced support for the Switch 2 console. This move is notable as it provides new features for a game that predates the newer system, Mario Kart World, which was the Switch 2's launch title. The update acknowledges the enduring popularity of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the best-selling game on the Nintendo Switch, and addresses the preference many players still hold for it over its successor.

The most prominent addition is the expansion of local multiplayer, which now supports up to eight racers, a substantial increase from the previous four-player cap. While this results in a more crowded screen, the option provides a welcome flexibility for larger gatherings. It is important to note that the Switch 2 can connect to seven Switch 1 controllers, meaning at least one player will need a Switch 2 Pro Controller or Joy-Con 2 to reach the full eight-player count.

Performance on the Switch 2 has also been improved, with shorter load times and higher resolutions available whether playing on the console's handheld display or connected to a TV. For those interested in alternative input methods, CameraPlay functionality has been added to Online Play and local multiplayer. However, the use of cameras in local multiplayer is restricted to four players, preventing its use in the new eight-player mode.

Several minor updates are also included, which apply to both Switch 1 and Switch 2 versions of the game. Player speeds have been subtly increased, described as "by the equivalent of one coin." The Boo power-up now offers complete immunity to slowing effects, even when driving off-road. Furthermore, players who own the Booster Course DLC can now participate in VS Races featuring up to 96 different courses.

The update is available now. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, despite being nearly a decade old, continues to receive support and improvements, solidifying its status as a landmark title in the Nintendo Switch library.
